Until 30 November 2022, plagiarism checking was what caught the cheats. Then ChatGPT launched, and pupils stopped copying. Plagiarism checking compares against text that already exists — and AI-generated text is new every time. The tool the school already owns stops working exactly when you need it.
What is left does different things: some look for AI traits in the finished text, others lock down the machine. But either way the same gap remains — you cannot see how the text came to be. And that is where you have to justify a suspicion to the pupil and the parents.
Guesses from linguistic traits. It produces both false positives and misses, and a probability score is not something you can confront a pupil with.
Locks the machine so the pupil cannot get out. What happened in between, you do not know.

If the pupil leaves the window or pastes text from outside, it is recorded and shown to the teacher. If the pupil needs to ask something, they message the teacher instead of raising a hand — the quiet in the room is left intact. Messages travel only between pupil and teacher. Pupils cannot reach each other.
Follow along while the session runs — who has started, who has submitted, who has had focus breaks recorded. Afterwards you replay how the text came to be, and assess the work, not just the result.
